Position Overview

The Senior Manager/Director Engineering will report to the CEO of AbeBooks and will lead the team responsible for our product development. The Senior Manager/Director Engineering will be responsible for leading a team of engineers in design, development, test, and deployment of applications that will speed production, improve our product and efficiency and reduce cost. The successful candidate will possess a unique combination of technical and management/organizational skills, capable of hiring, developing, motivating and energizing the very best Software Engineers and Leaders.

Primary Objectives

  • Responsibility for the overall systems development life cycle in close cooperation with Product Management team
  • Management and execution against project plans and delivery commitments as well as managing the day-to-day activities of the engineering team within an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Management of departmental resources, staffing, mentoring, and enhancing and maintaining a best-of-class engineering team
  • Working closely with the engineers to architect and develop the best technical design and approach
  • Reporting on status of development, quality, operations, and system performance to management
  • Management of site operations group including DBA's, Network and Systems and Search Systems Administrators, Internal Systems Manager
  • Manage 2 physical operation co-locations
  • Ensure operational health availability and performance of sites

Background & Experience

  • Computer Science/EE degree preferred with >10 years of experience within a technical environment, part of which is a strong record as a proven technology leader who insists on the highest standards, is results oriented, hires and develops great people and thinks big while still delivering on current project roadmap
  • Capable of working closely with product/program management and to ensure we're building the best products
  • Ability to effectively capture requirements from the business and communicate status reliably and effectively
  • Ability to lead a highly capable development team that develops and maintains a highly reliable and well performing website that is available 24/7
  • Excellent project management skills with a strong track record of project delivery for large, cross functional technical projects
  • Demonstrated expertise in problem solving and technical innovation capable of rolling-up sleeves and getting hands dirty
  • Development Expertise in OOP, Java, UNIX, Perl, XML, Web services, and Oracle (To be updated/reviewed by our tech team)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences, both technical and nontechnical

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our Marketing team. Reporting to the Manager, Online Marketing, you will be responsible for planning, execution, optimization and growth of our paid search (SEM) and natural search (SEO) channels together with a team of other Online Marketers in both the Victoria and the Dusseldorf office.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and implementation of tactical and strategic North-American paid search (SEM) campaigns
  • Responsible for all the paid search management tasks including all the search engine′s platforms and third parties PPC management tools
  • Planning, support and execution of tactics and strategies directed towards the improvement and growth of the natural search (SEO) channel
  • Responsible for all the natural search management tasks, including Google′s Webmaster Central maintenance, sitemaps submission and robots.txt audit, among others
  • Support search partners (paid and natural) account/relationship management, with an eye to improving AbeBooks′ search marketing efficiency and increasing revenue
  • In charge of reporting and analysis for the search marketing channels including daily, weekly and monthly reports and ad hoc analyses
  • Quantitative analysis of market segment performance, costs and activity levels
  • Assist in product planning/management and requirements development
  • Development and execution of search marketing tests and suggestion of actionable items based on the results
  • Responsible of achieving budgetary goals for SEO and SEM (including sales and expenses)
  • Responsible of communication the importance and potential of the SEO channel to the rest of the company
  • Responsible of being up to date on the latest developments on the natural search and paid search arena and communicating them to Manager, Online Marketing and the Director of Marketing

Qualifications

  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the abilities to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced, highly dynamic environment
  • Ideal candidate is highly analytical with a strong quantitative background in engineering, statistics, mathematics, economics, or related discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and innovate
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access, and PowerPoint Prior experience in consumer/retail/internet marketing or advertising a plus
  • Working knowledge of SQL a plus
  • Education: Bachelor′s Degree or equivalent

Network Administrator

We are looking for a responsible individual to provide all administration functions for network management including installation, diagnostics, support, and configuration.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all operational and administrative activities for network management including diagnosing/troubleshooting complex problems.
  • Maintain production LAN & WAN IP network infrastructure for a 24x7 web based company.
  • Identify and solve issues in a fast-paced atmosphere.
  • Administration and support of network hardware and software.
  • Effectively monitor performance of network infrastructure and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Respond to on-call pages one week every month, including on-call application server support.

Qualifications

  • University or college degree in Computer Science or Technology with three to five years experience in network administration in a mission-critical 24 x 7 x 365 network environment.
  • Experience with DNS administration including DNS tables and related software: Cisco CSS; Bind 9.2.2; and Win2k.
  • Experience with load balancing, related hardware and maintenance tasks: Cisco 11503 series CSS; configure load balanced groups and content rules; VLAN & interface configuration; and monitoring traffic flow & error logs.
  • Experience with Network switching (Layer 2, + 3) and related hardware: Cisco; Extreme Networks; HP.
  • Network maintenance tasks: cabling; rack installation; switch port assignment; VLAN configuration; monitoring for connectivity problems.
  • Experience with firewalls, related hardware, and maintenance tasks: Cisco PIX 520, 525, 506; access lists; VPN changes; static external IP assignments; monitoring firewall logs; and intrusion detection.
  • Experience monitoring website & network hardware including: maintaining site dashboard for network infrastructure.
  • Experience with network security including network application patching.
  • Experience with Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) implementation and administration.
  • Experience in administering Unix Systems would be an asset.

FillZ is a web-based service helping media sellers list and sell on marketplaces like AbeBooks, Amazon & eBay.

We′re looking for a Sys Admin who′s self-motivated, and willing to take responsibility for new ideas and initiatives. Being part of a small company, your input will be very important. We′re a small team, and members generally fill multiple roles; versatility and flexibility are critical, and we′ll support you as you pick up new skills.

Job Description:

This position′s main duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Monitor status of site functions, and provide updates to internal stakeholders in the event of site problems
  • Optimize and maintain replicating MySQL database infrastructure
  • Develop and maintain internal and external technical documentation
  • Work with & assist the development team as required
  • Provide technical assistance to customer issues
  • Provide configuration and query support for SQL users
  • Build knowledge & become a subject matter expert on FillZ operations
  • Be part of a rotating on-call duty, responding to critical events off hours

Must have skills:

  • Good attitude
  • Linux system administration (We use Centos which is a RedHat Enterprise derivative)
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL including MySQL administration and replication
  • Monitoring (We use Cacti and Nagios)
  • Backup and recovery (we use Duplicity)
  • Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, & ability to prioritize
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, results driven atmosphere

Nice to have skills:
