Michael Chabon became a household name in 2001 when he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, and has once again wowed the book world with his most recent effort, The Yiddish Policemen’s Union, which won the Nebula, Hugo, Locus, and British Science Fiction awards for Best Novel.
The Yiddish Policemen’s Union is set in the 1940s in a world where the state of Israel has been destroyed during their struggle for independence, and a temporary Yiddish-speaking settlement for European Jewish refugees has been established in Alaska. Within this setting the plot follows Meyer Landsman, an alcoholic detective, who must solve a murder that was committed in the roach motel where he lives while trying to ignore their impending demise.
