When you create a free public account with Abebooks, you gain access to exclusive features with Your Account.

You can:

• Order books through our secure server
• Save your shipping and contact information so that every time you order a book, your information is automatically included in the order details
• Save up to 500 free book wants and let us do the searching for you
• Sign up for our monthly newsletter

To create a free account:

1) Go to our homepage at www.Abebooks.com

2) Click on the "Sign On" icon at the top right of the page

You will now be at the "Sign On" page where you need to fill in all of the fields under the New Accounts section.

3) Enter the information that you will want to use to access your account:

• E-mail address - your full e-mail address e.g. bob@bobsbooks.com
• Password - a name or secret code that only you know and will easily remember e.g. volkswagen
• Hint - a word or phrase that relates to your password that you can ask to be displayed if you cannot remember your password e.g. If your password is "volkswagen", you might use the hint "my car".

4) Read the terms and conditions and click in the [I Agree] box below

5) Select the 'Yes' or 'No' radio button to indicate whether you would like to receive our monthly newsletter

6) Click on the [Create Account] button at the bottom of the page to submit your application

 

Add or Modify your account information:

After you have Signed On, you are shown "Your Account" page where you can add or change any of your personal information.

1) Click [Your Account Information]

2) Click [Update Your Account Information]

On the Update Your Account page, you can enter shipping information, credit card details and currency preferences.

• Shipping Information
  You may choose to enter your shipping address so that every time you sign on to order a book, your address information will be filled in automatically
• Credit Cards
  You can enter your Visa and/or MasterCard details on our secure server by clicking on the [Manage My Cards] button
• Currency
  Choose your Currency Preference from the drop-down list so that search results will be displayed in your chosen currency

3) Click the [Update Details] button at the bottom of the page. Your information will be saved and you will be directed back to Your Account

To buy books on Abebooks you need to create a free account. The account information you provide us will ensure that:

• Your order is shipped to the correct address
• The Bookseller can quickly contact you if there are problems with the order
• You can track your orders online and view an up to the minute status of your book orders

Abebooks does not "sell" or "give away" any account information that is stored within its member's directories. We do not feel it is ethical, nor would we be a responsible company if we did so.

When a customer enters a new want (a book that they are looking for) with Abebooks, they receive an e-mail notification once the book they listed has been found. Abebooks Booksellers have no way of knowing which customer is looking for that particular book. We do notify Booksellers that their book has been matched with a nameless customer, but we do not provide them with any personal information. This is a buyer's market. We feel it is up to the consumer to determine which book they wish to buy.

You can change the account information you entered about yourself when you first created your account on Abebooks.

1) From the homepage, click on the [Your Account] link at the top of the page

2) Click [Your Account Information]

3) Click [Update Your Account Information]

On the "Update Your Account" page, you can also enter or modify shipping information, credit card details and currency preferences.

4) Make the changes you require

5) Click the [Update Details] button. You will be taken back to the "Your Account" page.

Note: you can also change your password by clicking on the [Change Your Password] link on the "Your Account Information" page

If you want to delete your free account you can do so from the "Your Account" page.

1) From Your Account page, click on [Your Account Information]

2) Click on [Delete your Account]. This will take you to the "Delete Your Account" page

3) Click on the [Delete] button to permanently delete your account, OR click the [Cancel] button to abort the deletion.

When your account is deleted, all of your personal information will be deleted from our database, including your credit card number, your wants and your purchase history.

When you sign on to Abebooks, you will need to enter the e-mail address and password that you used to create the account. If you try to sign on to the site and the password does not match the e-mail address that you have entered, you can choose to have your password e-mailed to you.

1) Click the [Forgot Your Password] link to have your password e-mailed to you.

This e-mail is usually sent within a few minutes of the request.

If you have any problem with this process, please contact us. You MUST provide us with the e-mail address you used to open an account with Abebooks.

Please be aware that Abebooks booksellers often need to contact book buyers directly through e-mail to clarify the book order. Some of our buyers have set their e-mail program to block e-mail from unknown senders, therefore, are not receiving these messages. If you place an order through the Abebooks web site, please add the bookseller's e-mail to your contacts or address list, or check your blocked messages periodically. You can find the bookseller's e-mail address on the bookseller information page found by clicking on the [Bookstore Name] link in the book listing or on the Item Details page in the Track your orders section.

We can re-send you the instructions that you received from Abebooks when you first became a book buyer. These instructions explain how to review orders, confirmations and other mail. To re-send this e-mail:

1) From the homepage, click on [Members] at the top of the page

2) At the Sign On page (if you are not already signed on), enter your e-mail address and password, then press the [Sign On] button

3) On the "Your Account" page, click [Your E-mail] to go to the "Your E-mail" page

4) Click [View and Re-send E-mail]

Abebooks will re-send the instructions to your e-mail address.

In order for you to sign on to Abebooks and to allow us to protect your information, we must be able to verify your identity each time you request or send information to our site. We do this by reading a "Cookie" file (a string of numbers) stored on your computer. In order for this process to work, you must have your Internet browser configured to accept Cookies.

How to enable your Cookies

These instructions explain how to enable Cookies for common Internet Browsers. If you are unsure of what your browser type and version you are using, you can easily find out.

1) Open your browser as you would when you are going to view a Web site

2) Click on the Help menu

3) Select [About] *name*.

In the dialog box that appears the name and version of your browser will be listed e.g. Internet Explorer 5.50

1) From the Tools menu, select [Internet Options]

2) Click the [Privacy] tab

3) Click the [Advanced...] button

4) Click on the [Override automatic cookie handling] checkbox

5) Set First Party Cookies to Accept

6) Set Third Party Cookies to Accept

7) Click on the [Always allow session cookies] checkbox

8) Click the [OK] button

Internet Explorer 5.x

1) From the Tools menu, select [Internet Options]

2) Click the [Security] tab

3) Click the [Custom Level...] button

4) Scroll down through the window to locate the Cookie Section. Internet Explorer 5 contains two separate locations where cookies are changed:

a) Allow Cookies that are stored on your computer

b) Allow per-session Cookies, not stored

5) Enable your Cookies and click [OK]

 

Internet Explorer 3x, 4.0

1) From the View menu, select [Internet Options]

2) Click the [Advanced] tab

3) Select the appropriate Cookie Preferences

Netscape 7.x

1) From the Edit menu, select Preferences

2) Select the Privacy & Security category. You can do this by double-clicking on Privacy & Security

3) Select the Cookies subcategory

4) Select "Enable all cookies"

5) Click [OK]

Netscape Communicator (newer versions)

1) From the Edit menu, select Preferences

2) Click Advanced

3) On the right, you will see Cookies

4) Select "Accept all cookies"

5) Click [OK]

 

Netscape Communicator (version 3 and older)

1) From the Options menu, select [Preferences]

2) Click the [Protocol] tab

3) Here you will see your Cookie Preferences

1) From the File menu, select [Preferences]

2) Select [Privacy]

3) Make sure the Cookies settings are set to:

• Automatically Accept All Cookies
• Accept From Any Server
