Web Page Security

The AbeBooks Web site is secure for credit card transactions.  You receive messages when entering a secure encrypted area of the Web site and proceeding to a normal area or vice versa.

When you enter your credit card number or sign on to our site, the information you enter is encrypted for your protection. You can recognize a secure page by the closed padlock symbol in the browser status bar at the bottom the window, or if the URL in the address bar that begins with https as opposed to the usual http. The "s" indicates a secure page.

Internet Explorer Page Security

The common Internet Explorer message you see when you leave a secure page is:

"You are about to be redirected to a connection that is not secure. The information you are sending to the current site might be re-transmitted to a non-secure site. Do you wish to continue? Yes/No."

To check the security settings for a Web page in Internet Explorer:

  1. Find a Web page that is secure. For example, the page you enter your credit card information.
  2. Right-click inside the secure frame.
  3. Click [Properties].
 

The address information should indicate a proper "https" (secure) connection made through SSL 3.0 with 128-bit encryption.

Netscape Page Security

The common Netscape message you see when you leave a secure page is:

"Warning! You have requested an insecure document that was originally designated a secure document (the location has been redirected from a secure to an insecure document). The document and any information you send back could be observed by a third party while in transit."

To check the security settings for a Web page in Netscape:

  1. Find a Web page that is secure. For example, the page you enter your credit card information.
  2. Right-click inside the secure frame.
  3. Click [View frame info] option.
 

The frame information should indicate a proper "https" (secure) URL loaded.
