The Bookseller Digest December 2007
[]

Hello,

In just a few short weeks it's textbook season all over again, so this month’s digest includes tips to help all booksellers make the most of this busy time. We're finishing off our series on AbeBooks subsidiaries by profiling LibraryThing, and you’ll find a profile of an AbeBooks bookseller, Royal Books, as well. Also included in December's digest: information on the AbeBooks Wiki and an upcoming feature marking the 100th Anniversary of The Wind in the Willows. And last, but definitely not least, please join us in welcoming the newest member or your Sales & Account Management Team, Anna Knutson!

    Announcing AbeBooks Coupons!
We are very excited to announce that over the next little while, we will be testing the new AbeBooks Coupon system. Coupons will be issued by AbeBooks, and will be used to encourage buyers to discover and return to AbeBooks. All coupon costs will be completely covered by AbeBooks; booksellers will receive the full purchase price for all books ordered with the use of a coupon.

You will soon notice a Coupon Code field at the bottom of the Shopping Basket. Shortly afterward, coupon testing will begin with our Bookseller Advisory Group and our Customer Advisory Board. If you would like to be one of the first to try out the Coupon system, we invite you to join the Bookseller Advisory Group to receive your coupon and provide your feedback on this new feature.

    Welcome Anna Knutson!
We are pleased announce that Anna Knutson has joined our Sales and Account Management Team. Anna will work alongside Marc Fournet, and together they will focus on assisting our textbook sellers. Anna was previously a member of our Customer Support Team and brings with her a wealth of experience and enthusiasm, making her a great asset to our team. Anna can be reached at aknutson@abebooks.com.

    Textbook Season is Fast Approaching!
Every Textbook Season on AbeBooks is busier than the last. We’re already gearing up for an exciting January and wanted to offer a few tips to help booksellers prepare for the rush.

Review the Top 5 Textbook Season Tips.

    Bookseller Profile: Royal Books
Kevin Johnson, the owner of Royal Books in Baltimore, is a man of many talents. Aside from being one of the America's top sellers of collectible modern first editions, Kevin has just released his first book – The Dark Page: Books That Inspired American Film Noir 1940-1949.

A former government civil servant and a one-time musician, Johnson defines Film Noir as a style rather than a genre. For most of us, Film Noir is recognized primarily as gritty, black and white crime dramas with doomed anti-heroes and disheartening endings. However, as Johnson points out, the Film Noir style has stretched across westerns, science fiction, romance and other genres.

    AbeBooks Subsidiaries: LibraryThing
This month we are pleased to present the third in our series highlighting AbeBooks subsidiary companies: who they are, what they do, and how they can help you! This month’s featured subsidiary is LibraryThing.

LibraryThing is an online service designed to help people catalog their books easily. You can access your catalog from anywhere—even on your mobile phone. Because everyone catalogs together, LibraryThing is able to connect people who own the same books, come up with suggestions for what to read next, and do all sorts of similarly fun and interesting things.

Checking Your 'For Sale' Count in HomeBase: Viewing Statistics and Reports
    by Tracy
Abebooks HomeBase can create reports showing the current counts for books, catalogs, wants, clients, and invoices. The statistics for books are also broken down by the number of books 'For Sale,' 'On Hold,' and 'Sold.' The reports are available to view, save, and print. Many booksellers find this feature helpful in comparing 'For Sale' listings in HomeBase with their online Book Counts.

    AbeBooks Wiki – Book Fairs
Last month, we launched the AbeBooks Wiki, a place where booksellers and book buyers can find and share information on everything related to books. This month, we are requesting that you help us create an extensive and exhaustive list of Book Fairs for 2008. Please add and edit our Book Fairs article at http://wiki.abebooks.com/index.php/Book_Fairs. If you aren’t comfortable entering the information into the table format, just add a note at the bottom of the page and someone in the community will fix it up. That’s the magic of the Wiki!

And while you are on our Wiki, feel free to browse, add and edit any article related to books.

Wind in the Willows 100th Anniversary
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame will celebrate 100 years in print in 2008. To honour this milestone, AbeBooks is planning a Wind in the Willows feature for January, so be sure to upload any copies that you have in stock!

If you have an idea for a unique feature, send us an email!

    Reminder: Check Orders Online
Our Security and Trust Team would like to remind all booksellers that we recommend that you sign on to your AbeBooks account at least once a day to view your orders, rather than wait for email notification. Checking your orders online saves you time, since you must process orders from the AbeBooks web site anyway.

Changes made by your ISP, spam filters, and virus protection software can all contribute to problems receiving your AbeBooks email. Our order notifications are convenient reminders, but they shouldn’t be solely relied upon to inform you that you have orders.
