Hello,

If you're following the Reading Guide, you should be into the last third of the novel this week. Don't worry if you're just getting started; you won't be able to put the book down, and we'll continue the discussions for two more weeks.

Winter Descends
It's winter, and the Mechanik is starting to fear for the worst after his wife hasn't returned. Meanwhile, Father Piotr has helped restore some light to Gretel's dark retreat. In the final third of the book, we'll see how Hansel's new friendship leads to harm, and will follow the children as they try to find their old bread crumb trail. Will it lead them home? And what does "home" mean to a separated family during war?

Everyone's enjoying the book so far, but my favorite comment comes from booklover_4joy:

"I am passing this on to my adult children to read and hope they will pass it on to friends of theirs so we will all remember how blessed we are and to never forget what could happen if we forget to love."

Will you be sharing the novel with others? Join our discussion as we examine the non-traditional Step Mother and the character of the forest. [Share your thoughts.]

Happy reading,

P.S. Right now I'm also reading The Girls by Lori Lansens.

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel
Combining classic themes of fairy tales and war literature, this haunting novel of journey and survival, of redemption and memory, powerfully depicts how war is experienced by families and especially by children.
