Hello,

Moloka'i is one of my favorite reads with the Book Club so far - I hope you're enjoying it as much as I did!

Rachel's Story
It's easy to become caught up in this novel with such breath-taking descriptions of Honolulu from Alan Brennert. In the first part of the book, we become part of the Kalama family and feel the pain of Uncle Pono being sent to the island of Moloka'i when his leprosy is discovered. The marks on Rachel's legs can't be hidden for much longer - read on to follow her amazing life story.

Discussing Moloka'i
Reading historical fiction is a unique experience: we can enjoy the story and characters, and learn about the past or another culture at the same time. Do you think that the 19th century Hawaiian government's isolation of patients on Moloka'i was justified? How do you think you would react if one of your loved ones was sent away because of an illness? [Join the discussion.] I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Happy reading,

Jennifer

P.S. Right now I'm also reading The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy.
