Hi,

Although we're still reading Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen I thought we could start to think about the next book we want to read. If you haven't checked out the current discussion on Water for Elephants in the forum, I would stop on by and give your thoughts on the book.

Water for Elephants is a much faster read for me than Bridge of Sighs was. I'm already more than half-way through the book and read it every chance I get: waiting for the bus, on the bus, at breaks at work, and even while I'm waiting for meetings.

Some of you mentioned you'd like to start reading a few more books together than one every two months. I'd love feedback on this. How often would you like to be reading a book with the book club? As always, feel free to email me.

The vote will start February 1st and remain open until the 8th. We'll aim to start reading around late February or so.

This month the choices are:

Please vote here for your favorite choice!

Cheers,
Heather

Three Cups of Tea is the inspiring account of one man's campaign to build schools in the most dangerous, remote, and anti-American reaches of Asia.

In 1993 Greg Mortenson was the exhausted survivor of a failed attempt to ascend K2, an American climbing bum wandering emaciated and lost through Pakistan's Karakoram Himalaya. After he was taken in and nursed back to health by the people of an impoverished Pakistani village, Mortenson promised to return one day and build them a school. From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time—Greg Mortenson's one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban.

This classic novel tells the story of seventeen-year-old Cassandra and her extraordinary family, who live in not-so-genteel poverty in a ramshackle old English castle. Cassandra's eccentric father is a writer whose first book took the literary world by storm but he has since failed to write a single word and now spends most of his time reading detective novels from the village library. Cassandra's elder sister, Rose - exquisitely beautiful, vain and bored - despairs of her family's circumstances and determines to marry their affluent American landlord, Simon regardless of the fact she does not love him. She is in turns helped and hindered in this by their bohemian step-mother Topaz, an artist's model and nudist who likes to commune with nature.

Sera is an upper-middle-class Parsi housewife whose opulent surroundings hide the shame and disappointment of her abusive marriage. A widow, she devotes herself to her family, spending much of her time caring for her pregnant daughter, Dinaz, a kindhearted, educated professional, and her charming and successful son-in-law, Viraf.
