Hello,

Thanks to everyone who voted in our latest Book Club pick poll!

The Next Pick
Almost half of the votes were for Louise Murphy's The True Story of Hansel and Gretel. [See the results.] It'll be tough to follow Moloka'i, but I think everyone will enjoy this suspenseful and compassionate novel. Here's a summary:

In the last months of the Nazi occupation of Poland, two children are left by their father and stepmother to find safety in a dense forest. Because their real names reveal their Jewishness, they're renamed "Hansel" and "Gretel." They wander in the woods until they're taken in by Magda, an eccentric old woman called "witch" by the villagers.

We should have a lot to discuss as we compare this novel to the original fairy tale and read it as war literature as well. We'll start the discussion in two weeks, so you have time to order your copy and start reading!

Happy reading,

Jennifer

P.S. Right now I'm also reading The Ground Beneath Her Feet by Salman Rushdie.

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel
Combining classic themes of fairy tales and war literature, this haunting novel of journey and survival, of redemption and memory, powerfully depicts how war is experienced by families and especially by children.
