Hi We have a winner! The vote was neck and neck between Peony in Love and Bridge of Sighs, but at the last moment Bridge of Sighs by Richard Russo pulled ahead and won as the next novel to read. While there was quite a lot of interest in The Chosen by Chaim Potok it couldn't quite compete with the two newer books. Here's a more thorough overview of the book to peak your interest... |

Louis Charles (“Lucy”) Lynch has spent all his sixty years in upstate Thomaston, New York, married to the same woman, Sarah, for forty of them, their son now a grown man. Like his late, beloved father, Lucy is an optimist, though he’s had plenty of reasons not to be—chief among them his mother, still indomitably alive. Yet it was her shrewdness, combined with that Lynch optimism, that had propelled them years ago to the right side of the tracks and created an “empire” of convenience stores about to be passed on to the next generation. Lucy and Sarah are also preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Italy, where his oldest friend, a renowned painter, has exiled himself far from anything they’d known in childhood. In fact, the exact nature of their friendship is one of the many mysteries Lucy hopes to untangle in the “history” he’s writing of his hometown and family. And with his story interspersed with that of Noonan, the native son who’d fled so long ago, the destinies building up around both of them (and Sarah, too) are relentless, constantly surprising, and utterly revealing. |

Order your copy soon so that you can start reading with the Book Club on Monday December 3rd. While some of you you may be reading your book while basking in sunny warmth, I will likely be reading my copy under a warm blanket while the wind and rain lashes against my windows. Perhaps a cup of hot chocolate will creep it's way in between the chapters as well. I'm looking forward to discussing the book with everyone and I'm also planning on hosting a chat session so we can have an actual time to talk. Keep checking in on the Book Club forum to find out the date as it'll be in the first week of the reading schedule. Thanks for the great turn out on the vote and I always like to hear your feedback. In this light, I have started a vote on what types of books you would like to read and discuss. Since I know you all have such varied interests, it would be great to have varied picks so that everyone can join! You can vote here. Enjoy the adventure. Heather |
