What is ISBN Lookup?

ISBN Lookup enables registered abebooks.com booksellers to enter an ISBN when cataloging a book. HomeBase 2.1 then connects to our web site and automatically retrieves some of the book's associated information (e.g. author, illustrator, publisher, keywords) and displays it in the appropriate field boxes. However, we do recommend that you verify the information as it may not always be correct; for example, the book may have been published by a company that has since relocated or been bought out by another publisher, etc.

Do I have to be an Abebooks.com member to take advantage of the ISBN feature?

I entered a valid ISBN but I disagree with the information that was automatically put into my book record. Why is the information inaccurate?

There are various possibilities. The book may have been published by a company that has since relocated or was bought by another publisher; or the book may have had several printings. We recommend that you always compare the downloaded Bowker information with the information that's in your copy of the book. You can always edit the information before saving the record in HomeBase. Abebooks.com takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the information provided through the use of ISBN Lookup.

If I use this feature in HomeBase, will I be able to send my files to other web sites?

Yes. You may upload to other bookselling web sites. There is no exclusivity clause associated with the Bowker data we are supplying to our members.

I've downloaded the ISBN upgrade for HomeBase but it's not working. What should I do?

There are 2 possibilities:

  1. You have an hb2 sub-folder (created when you downloaded the 2.1 upgrade)
  2. The new hb2 folder is on a different drive or in a different folder.

Either way, you will need to copy the hb2 folder into the same folder as your original HomeBase 2.0.3 download. Please call our HelpDesk if you need some assistance with this.

Help! I got an error message. What should I do?

Please check the following list of error messages for a possible solution.

  • Error Message: ISBN entered is not valid. Please check the number to ensure that all ten digits are correct.
Resolution: Please double check the number to ensure that all ten digits are filled in. An ISBN number can end with an "x" with the "x" being entered as a placeholder. It can be entered in either upper or lower case. Bowker provides records for books published in the United States and Canada only. Also, not all ISBNs are currently available for Lookup but we are working to increase the number of ISBNs available.

  • Error Message:Warning! Some or all fields used by the ISBN Lookup already contained information. This information was left untouched by the system. Please verify its correctness.
Resolution: ISBN Lookup will not overwrite book information you have previously entered. If you want to use the Bowker information, you will need to delete the text you entered into HomeBase before clicking on ISBN Lookup.

  • Error Message: ISBN Lookup feature is only available to abebooks.com member booksellers.
Resolution: Start HomeBase. Click on View then select Options. Make sure your ABE userid and password are entered correctly. (Remember, your password is case-sensitive. If you are unsure of your userid or password, please contact our HelpDesk and we will email them to you. If you have entered your userid and password correctly but you are still unable to use the Lookup Feature, please view the help files.

  • Error Message: Unable to establish a connection with abebooks.com. Please try again.
Resolution: Try connecting to the Internet prior to using HomeBase's ISBN Lookup. If you are connected to the Internet, the problem may be due to site traffic or there may be a problem with the connection between our site and your Internet Service Provider. Try again later.

What if I don't want all of the information for each book?

You can specify the data you want to retrieve by clicking on ISBN Preferences from the Add a Book or Edit a book function in HomeBase 2.1. You will be taken to a web page on our site and once there, you will be able to select Yes or No for each of the available fields. Click on Save ISBN Preferences. This will affect every ISBN lookup performed, so you do not need to do this each time you perform an ISBN lookup.
