ISBN Lookup enables registered abebooks.com booksellers to enter an ISBN when cataloging a book. HomeBase 2.1 then connects to our web site and automatically retrieves some of the book's associated information (e.g. author, illustrator, publisher, keywords) and displays it in the appropriate field boxes. However, we do recommend that you verify the information as it may not always be correct; for example, the book may have been published by a company that has since relocated or been bought out by another publisher, etc. |
Do I have to be an Abebooks.com member to take advantage of the ISBN feature? |
Yes. You must be registered as a bookseller with us in order to take advantage of this timesaving feature. Your userid and password will be checked on our site when you enter an ISBN using the 'Add a Book' or 'Edit a Book' functions. |
You will be able to download the following information:
|
There are various possibilities. The book may have been published by a company that has since relocated or was bought by another publisher; or the book may have had several printings. We recommend that you always compare the downloaded Bowker information with the information that's in your copy of the book. You can always edit the information before saving the record in HomeBase. Abebooks.com takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the information provided through the use of ISBN Lookup. |
If I use this feature in HomeBase, will I be able to send my files to other web sites? |
Yes. You may upload to other bookselling web sites. There is no exclusivity clause associated with the Bowker data we are supplying to our members. |
I've downloaded the ISBN upgrade for HomeBase but it's not working. What should I do? |
There are 2 possibilities:
Either way, you will need to copy the hb2 folder into the same folder as your original HomeBase 2.0.3 download. Please call our HelpDesk if you need some assistance with this. |
Please check the following list of error messages for a possible solution.
|
You can specify the data you want to retrieve by clicking on ISBN Preferences from the Add a Book or Edit a book function in HomeBase 2.1. You will be taken to a web page on our site and once there, you will be able to select Yes or No for each of the available fields. Click on Save ISBN Preferences. This will affect every ISBN lookup performed, so you do not need to do this each time you perform an ISBN lookup. |
We obtain the ISBN data from Bowker and store it at Abebooks.com. |
We will receive updates from Bowker on a weekly basis. These updates will include new records, updates and deletions. |
