Title: Per il fatto del imperio e temporale della ...

Publisher: c. 1610

Publication Date: 1610

Binding: Hardcover

Book Condition: Very Good

Description:

Seventeenth-century manuscipt. Contemporary vellum over boards (about 6.25x9 inches), gilt-stamped lettering in spine label; pp. 142, manuscript, in Italian. Boards and spine dust-soiled and a little scuffed; some faint stains here and there throughout text block, but in very good condition overall, perfectly legible. With the late-18th or early-19th century armorial bookplate of the Marchionis Salsae (on front paste-down), and the 19th-century armorial bookplate of John William War, Earl of Dudley, who purchased part of the Salza library after the death of Francesco Maria Berio in 1820 (the bookplate reads "Comme je fus"). Seeking the truth in historiography -- the works recorded here were apparently extracted from the Historiam ab inclinatione Romanorum imperii decades of Flavio Biondo (not Giuliu, as written in the subtitle), and it 16th-century continuation, this Italian translation contains selected excerpts from the illustrious Renaissance historian's masterpiece. Biondo's work would have formed the logical starting point for any analysis of Italian history during the early seventeenth century, having stood as an authoritative text for more than a century and having been consulted by Machiavelli in his own investigation of Italy's disunity. The two-page anonymous preface in the present manuscript explains the editor's goal of seeking truth and exposing falsehood in the historical record, especially concerning the pontifical states.
