8vo (143 x 96mm). 206pp. Lithograph frontispiece in color depicting American-Indian men throwing hatchets at the captured boy. Original paper boards backed in cloth, paper label to spine; (somewhat foxed; lightly worn). Rare. This edition found only in two institutional libraries in North America. It is the German translation of Hoflandís work The Stolen Boy: an American Indian Tale, first published in London circa 1830. Hofland published several novels although is best known for her didactic, moral stories for children which appeared in poetry and schoolbooks. In her note to the reader Hofland writes, ìÖthe Story of the Stolen Boy is founded on factsî which have been relayed to her by those ìwho became acquaintedî with the boyís great escape. Hoflandís realistic stories about adventure, hardship, work and family life gained her considerable success. Her distinctive writing style may have influenced contemporary authors like Charlotte BrontÎ and Charles Dickens. Seller Inventory # 6599
