The Book Beat is a general independent bookstore specializing in Art, Photography, African-American, Performing arts, Folk-art and Children's books, serving the Detroit metropolitan area since 1982. We also maintain a stock of 19th and 20th century photography, with an emphasis on Nudes (Male and Female), Surrealism, show-girls, Marilyn Monroe, Aktionism, Hollywood, Dags, 19th C. middle east and edgy contemporary art. Our gallery holds exhibitions in photography, folk-art, Haitian Vodou Art and painting. We occasionaly publish art catalogs, monographs, CD's, CD-ROM's, Videos, artist books and items related to the group "Destroy All Monsters"-(Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw, Cary Loren) an artist collective since 1974, exploring visual, installation and performance art. We will also send our 1997 catalog "Strange Desires" to anyone requesting a copy. We are open 7 days a week Mon-Sat 10 AM-9 PM, Sun.11-6 PM, and are located just Nortwest of Detroit off I-696, between 10 and 11 mile road at 26010 Greenfield.
