About Famulus Books
At last! After three years in the Phantom Zone of exclusive online selling, we have rematerialized in an honest-to-God, brick-and-mortar, walk-in location – a charming shop, at the intersection of South 22nd and Rittenhouse Square Streets (between Locust and Spruce). It’s a terrific neighborhood – lots of foot traffic, without the congestion of midtown. On this block alone, one can enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee, order a gourmet pizza, attend a concert at the Trinity Center for Urban Life, or sit down to a fine Italian meal.
If you’re at all familiar with, or nostalgic for, our original shop – well, I’d almost say we’ve got that beat. Most of the bookcases are the same – blond pine and monolithic – only now the lighting is better, the store is climate controlled (no more sweltering summers), and we’ve got wrap-around windows in front, so we’re actually visible from the street. Further, we’ve started putting out a stall or two of bargain books during nice weather, just to help you find us. The building is adorned with awnings, a brick façade, and a lovely flower garden during the spring and summer months. If you’re walking south on 22nd Street, keep an eye out for the “Meats & Provisions” sign, a relic of one of our historic predecessors (established 1886).
Most importantly for lovers of books, our inventory continues to be as selective and high-quality as ever. We continue to pride ourselves on providing solid, clean copies of worthwhile literature and nonfiction at affordable prices. A major step forward for us is that we can now accept your Visa or Mastercard. So no more having to dash out in search of an ATM machine!
As we continue to unpack boxes in the catacombs beneath the shop, we’re discovering rarities we never knew we had. Several libraries were purchased very close to the end of the last store’s existence, and a shamefully large percentage of those books are only now just coming to light. It is our plan to offer the crème de la crème through this website, since they are the types of books we wouldn’t want jostled around with the general inventory.
If you don’t see something listed here, or perhaps longingly remember a specific volume from our former location, please email us. During our last move, we had something in the vicinity of 20,000 titles. Only a fraction of those will ever be represented in the store at one time. Even at “Aladdin’s Cave” capacity (which is what we’re shooting for), our sales space is limited. Such is the necessity of doing affordable business in the big city.
Famulus Books continues to be a quality bookselling operation in the Rittenhouse Square vicinity, in the heart of Philadelphia. If you’re in the area, by all means, stop in and say hello. Our sales methods are extremely low pressure (which is to say, virtually non-existent), and we always encourage browsers.
