From Library Journal:
The breadth and meticulous rendering of this volume's contents, heretofore available only in widely scattered sources, mark this book as a classic of Civil War historiography. Welcher recounts the continuous organizational history of the Union's four military divisions, 26 departments, 13 field armies and their corps, and 16 special commands. Included are dates of creation and discontinuance, composition, organizational changes, commanders' names, and numerous details on the geographical boundaries of divisions. The book's final section gives the orders of battle and detailed (usually daily) itineraries of all major units during all campaigns, major battles, and notable "engagements, expeditions, raids, and reconnaissances." A fundamental reference work.
