Having evolved over the past two and a quarter centuries to become the premier military force in the world, the U.S. Army has a heritage rich in history and tradition. This historical dictionary provides short, clear, authoritative entries on a broad cross section of military terms, concepts, arms and equipment, units and organizations, campaigns and battles, and people who have had a significant impact on Army. It includes over 900 entries written by some 100 scholars, providing a valuable resource for the interested reader, student, and researcher.
For those interested in pursuing specific subjects further, the book provides sources at the end of each entry as well as a general bibliography. Appendixes provide a useful list of abbreviations and acronyms and a listing of ranks and grades in the U.S. Army.

JEROLD E. BROWN is currently Associate Professor and Fellow of the Combat Studies Institute of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth./e He teaches the evolution of modern warfare and is one of the Institute's experts on the U.S. Army. He has published extensively on military subjects.
In alphabetical arrangement, the dictionary covers people, such as Omar Nelson Bradley, John Charles Fremont, and George Patton; military terminology, like Absent without leave, Field officer of the day, and Police call; and weaponry, including Gatling gun, Pineapple grenade, and Sherman M4 medium tank. Also described are military vehicles (e.g., Armored recovery vehicle, Half-track, Hummer), significant places (The Citadel, Mekong Delta, Rock Island Arsenal), and engagements (Boxer Rebellion, Hamburger Hill, Nez Perce War).
Military slang is explained too, and readers can learn the derivation of terms such as hough, jody, and doughboy. (The derivation of this last term is obscure and has been traced variously to the buttons on Civil War uniforms, the clay that was used for cleaning 1800s-era infantry uniform belts, and the adobe dust that coated the uniforms of soldiers stationed near the Mexican border in the early twentieth century.)
Aspects of popular culture that are related to the military have not been left out. For example, there are entries for Sergeant Bilko, the 1950s CBS series starring Phil Silvers, and for television's longest running WWII series, Combat. As with any good source of this type, readers will be able to pick up some intriguing bits of information. Consider the entry Rome plow. Apparently a Civil War-era inventor "patented a plow that incorporated a small cannon above the plowshare. In theory, the farmer could ward off enemy attacks while continuing to work his fields near disputed areas." (The idea did not catch on.)
Historical Dictionary of the U.S. Army will be a valuable stand-alone information source in smaller libraries and will serve as a useful supplement in larger libraries that have more extensive sources on this topic. REVWR
