From the master of alternate history comes an epic of the second Civil War. It was an epoch of glory and success, of disaster and despair. . . .

1881: A generation after the South won the Civil War, America writhed once more in the bloody throes of battle. Furious over the annexation of key Mexican territory, the United States declared total war against the Confederate States of America in 1881.

But this was a new kind of war, fought on a lawless frontier where the blue and gray battled not only each other but the Apache, the outlaw, the French, and the English. As Confederate General Stonewall Jackson again demonstrated his military expertise, the North struggled to find a leader who could prove his equal. In the Second War Between the States, the times, the stakes, and the battle lines had changed--and so would history. . .

From the Publisher:
I was on the set of the Babylon 5 TV series, and asked to be introduced to series star Bruce Boxleitner. You see, I know one of his hidden pleasures. When I met Bruce, I noted that I was to have dinner that evening with Harry Turtledove.

Bruce asked me to apologize to Harry, for having missed a recent book signing (for HOW FEW REMAIN). Bruce explained that he'd been in Vancouver, where his wife was filming a television movie, and hadn't been able to make it to the store where Harry was to appear. However, Bruce was deep into HFR, and was loving every page. He enthused over what Harry had done with Stonewall Jackson, with Mark Twain, with George Armstrong Custer. He wouldn't stop . . . as the makeup person finished and he walked off toward dress rehearsal, alongside his fellow actors, he turned and shouted back, "And I love what he's done with Lincoln!"

There's a man who knows what he likes. I'm almost afraid to ask what he thinks of THE GREAT WAR.
                                --Steve Saffel, Senior Editor
From the Back Cover:
"COMPELLING . . . HIS MOST GRIPPING NOVEL SINCE THE GUNS OF THE SOUTH."
--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"HIGHLY RECOMMENDED . . . Turtledove is an accomplished professional . . . and has given us an entertainment that makes us think somewhat about why we are the way we are."
--Library Journal
