From Library Journal:
Published irregularly since 1897, Chambers Biographical Dictionary has established itself as a standard reference work in thousands of collections. With the 1990 North American edition (the last edition was in 1986), the title has changed to the Cambridge Biographical Dictionary , and numerous other changes have been implemented as well. The number of entries has increased by one third to 19,000, and the scope of the book has been broadened to reflect a more international coverage and contemporary relevance. Entries for women, music and sports figures, and entertainment personalities have been expanded, while older articles have undergone revisions or reexaminations. Despite the international coverage, the focus is primarily European, and thus American subjects may prove disappointingly brief. However, the sheer volume of information is staggering, and few names that were researched failed to appear. Print is quite small but should not prove to be a problem for most patrons. Best of all, the writing is refreshingly literate and done with the English flair for understatement. As a single- volume, worldwide, all-period biographical dictionary, this has no peers. It is a superior ready reference tool at a reasonable price that continues to improve as it nears its centennial year. Highly recommended for all libraries. --James Moffet, Baldwin P.L., Birmingham, Mich.
