About the Author:
Dr David W Phillipson FSA is Director of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Reader in African Prehistory and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College in the University of Cambridge. He has been actively engaged on archaeological research in Africa since 1963 and is now President of the British Institute in Eastern Africa. His many publications include the standard work African Archaeology (Cambridge University Press, 1985, 1993). Since 1993 he has directed large-scale research at Aksum in Ethiopia.
