In Plato's Phaedo , the imprisoned Socrates converses about death with his friends while Phaedo, a young former slave, overhears the conversation. This study examines in depth three of Socrates' arguments in Phaedo for the immortality of the soul, and argues that Socrates deliberately undermines the three arguments by making specific claims that point to the most pressing flaw of each argument. The focus of the argument is the articulation of the developing proof in the Socratic "examples," from Phaedo , on "recollection," "duality," and "causality." Beck is head of the religion and philosophy department at Lyon College. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
