About the Author:

Averil Cameron is Professor of Late Antique and Byzantine History, University of Oxford. She was co-editor of Eusebius: Life of Constantine (1999) and author of The Later Roman Empire (1993). Elizabeth Hartley is Curator of the Constantine Project for York Museums Trust. Her previous publications for York Museums include editor of The Middleham Jewel and Ring (1994 - Gulbenkian Museum Publication of the Year Award), and Alcuin and Charlemagne: The Golden Age of York (2001). Jane Hawkes is Senior Lecturer in Late Antique and Anglo-Saxon Art in the Department of History of Art, University of York. She was co-editor of Northumbria's Golden Age (1999) and wrote The Sandbach Crosses: Sign and Significance of Anglo-Saxon Sculpture (2002). Martin Henig is Visiting Lecturer in Roman Art at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Oxford, and Honorary Editor of the British Archaeological Association. His previous publications include The Art of Roman Britain (1995) and Roman Sculpture from the North West Midlands (2004). Frances Mee is a freelance editor. Richard Abdy is Curator of Roman Coins in the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum. Paul Bidwell is Head of Archaeology at Tyne and Wear Museums.
