Review:
The polar bear is a cunning predator, hunting seals, walruses, and beluga whales. The females are also conscientious mothers, playing with, teaching, and disciplining their cubs for the two and a half years before they are weaned. This slender volume is packed with information about these beautiful and powerful animals. Written by noted researcher Nikita Ovsyanikov (who set up the famous polar-bear-viewing camp in Manitoba, Canada), the text is learned yet accessible, and bear lovers of all ages will appreciate the dozens of gorgeous photographs. --C.B. Delaney
