In W. R. Flynn's apocalyptic novel, Shut Down we discovered that the worldwide economic catastrophe brought about by peak oil, the overuse of scarce resources, wars, government deficit spending and overpopulation has left human civilization decimated and in ruins. Most survivors across North America have banded together in isolated farming communities closed to outsiders. This is the story of Corbett, Oregon, one of the larger self-sustaining colonies, two years after the collapse. Intended for readers of all ages, this novel introduces a severely wounded outsider, Michael "Buck" Baccellieri, who is discovered unconscious and near death along the bank of the Sandy River by two members of the tightly-knit Corbett colony. As Buck struggles to recover from his wounds, the people of this small isolated community face a new danger and are united by a sudden outpouring of compassion for a stranger. ** Read First Journey, another novel of the Corbett colony. During their fourth winter they send a small band of explorers on a journey into the depopulated ruins of Portland, Oregon. On the outskirts of downtown they encounter a small group of survivors who have learned to distrust and fear strangers, defending their surroundings with deadly force.** "Stone Warriors," is the fourth story of the Corbett colony. At the start of the eleventh summer after the worldwide economic collapse, the community faces a harsh and unforgiving crisis.

He is now retired after a professional background in law enforcement and secondary education. In the early 1980s he travelled throughout Eastern Europe and the USSR and in 1985 he spent a month in Cuba working on a communal farm. He has also travelled extensively with his family, spending considerable time in Singapore with numerous side trips to Malaysia, Thailand, Ireland, Japan and Hong Kong.
Review:
Our very own Troutdale author, William Flynn, has written a wonderful, uplifting new adventure for us to enjoy!  I strongly recommend this powerful novel. I found it entertaining and thought-provoking offering an optimistic portrayal of survival even in the harshest of times. Buck is a must-read!
