There are lots of Cinderellas in the world, like Charles Perrault's Cendrillon and Brothers Grimm's Aschenputtel .However, it is absolutely amazing to find a unique folk story of this kind among the people of the island of Socotra telling it in their oldest unwritten language and living in the most isolated and untouched lands covered with frankincense, myrrh and dragon's blood trees, harvesting the best aloe and telling the most essential and attractive tales when their babies and children go asleep. About the Author:
Vladimir M. Agafonov was born in Moscow in October 1953. In his childhood he lived with his family in East Germany and Poland. He studied Arabic also in Moscow and went to language practice as an interpreter to Cairo in 1973-1974. After graduation, he worked in South Yemen in 1976 - 1980 as an Arabic interpreter/translator, and that was the time when he often lived on the island of Socotra and started his independent field research of the oldest unwritten Semitic Soqotri language still alive. Recording Socotran folktales as the most adequate source of the Soqotri language, he found out that tales told on Socotra every night in 1970s by local herders in their homes and caves contained very old motives of European and even Ancient Egyptian tales. In 1990s he retold some of those tales in Russian, in 2000s - in English (they were also published in German in translation from the author's English versions).
