Eddie Anderson’s "Ironmen," who were led by Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick, ruled the Midwest in 1939 by defeating powerhouses Notre Dame, Minnesota and Wisconsin, en route to a 7–1 season. Then Forest Evashevski’s Hawkeyes proved to be the dominant force in the Big Ten throughout the late 1950s, winning a pair of Rose Bowls and a national championship in 1958.
In 1979 Hayden Fry arrived in Iowa City and quickly returned the Hawkeyes to glory by winning three Big Ten crowns and earning three trips to the Rose Bowl in his first 12 seasons. Overall, Fry led Iowa to eight straight bowl games from 1981 to 1988 and 14 bowl games in his 20 remarkable seasons.
Longtime Fry assistant Kirk Ferentz returned to replace the retiring legend in 1999, and thus began another era of dominance that is thriving today. Ferentz has taken the Hawkeyes to five straight bowl games, and from 2002 to 2004 his teams posted win totals of 11, 10, and 10, respectively.
