Norman R. Voigt, PE, PLS, is a registered civil engineer and land surveyor in Pennsylvania. Mr. Voigt obtained his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He has worked in both the private and public sectors, performing design, construction, maintenance, inspection services, and interagency project coordination on a variety of highway and transit projects. He has served as the principal coordinator for the civil PE intensive review course at Penn State Beaver, including organizing the course curriculum and teaching the transportation portion for more than 35 years. He has served as adjunct faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and The Pennsylvania State University. He has presented papers on various transportation subjects and on the role of adjunct faculty in undergraduate education, and has authored and edited several books on transportation engineering topics.

ABOUT THIS BOOK
Six-Minute Solutions for Civil PE Transportation Depth Exam Problems is organized into ten chapters. Each chapter contains problems that correspond to the format and scope that would be expected in the afternoon transportation depth section of the civil PE exam.
Most of the problems are quantitative, requiring calculations to arrive at a correct solution. A few are nonquantitative. As on the exam, some of this book’s problems will require a little more time to solve than others. On average, you should expect to spend about six minutes solving each problem.
Each problem includes a hint to provide direction in solving the problem. The solutions are presented in a step-by-step sequence to help you follow the logical development of the correct solution and to provide examples of how you may want to approach your solutions as you take the PE exam.
In addition to the correct solution, you will find an explanation of the faulty solutions leading to the three incorrect answer options. The incorrect options are intended to represent common mistakes specific to different problem types. These may be simple mathematical errors, such as failing to square a term in an equation, or more serious errors, such as using the wrong equation.
Though you won’t encounter problems on the exam exactly like those presented in this book, reviewing these problems and solutions will increase your familiarity with the exam’s format, content, and solution methods. This preparation will help you considerably during the exam.
