The "laryngeal theory" is currently the most important branch of Indo-European diachronic phonology. Although this theory is today considered to be the most essential factor in precisely determining sound shifts in the reconstruction of proto-Indo-European and therefore also of prime importance for questions concerning general diachronic linguistics, it was long neglected in German-speaking countries. Two monographs have been written concerning laryngeals in Greek and in Latin, and the importance of laryngeals on the central language groups of Hittite and other Anatolian languages has been adequately dealt with in recent studies concerning Anatolian phonology. The central Indo-Iranian language group has only been dealt with sparingly, as is commented upon in the introductory chapter of this volume. The aim of this work is to fill this gap; the most recent scholarly literature has been documented, and all essential evidence concerning Indo-Iranian is presented. The accessibility of the work is helped with numerous indices.
