Friends Penrod Porcupine and Griswold Bear, featured in Penrod Again (1987) and Penrod's Pants (1986, both Macmillan), return to share four more episodes that involve getting eyeglasses, riding a new bike, taking care of an "injured" friend, and planning a surprise birthday party. The bicycle episode is somewhat confusing; the most delightful episode involves the birthday party. Even though Schindler is a new illustrator for Penrod and Griswold, readers will readily recognize the characters. Clear, full-color illustrations clarify portions of the text and help readers visualize the action. The stories themselves are not as straightforward or as charming as the earlier offerings.
