The Northwestern Plains are in many ways a last frontier in American archeology. Except for early surges of professional interest in such Paleo-Indian sites as Lindenmeier, Agate Basin, and Finley, until recently there has been little to spark the interest of professional archeologists. Although never able to advance beyond the band level, prehistoric cultural groups on the Northwestern Plains were quite successful. Because of their ability to adapt, they managed to survive in an area where small changes in yearly precipitation had profound effects on the environment, and climatic fluctuations completely changed the resource bases. Many different economic strategies were tried, and succeeded or failed, in response to local differences in landforms, soils, elevations, precipitation and other factors that affected the flora and fauna. The area has been a testing ground for human ingenuity. Chapters: The Northwestern Plains as an Ecological Area for Prehistoric Hunting and Gathering; The Archeological Record for the Northwestern Plains; The Clovis Complex and Mammoth Hunting; The Folsom Occupation; Prehistoric Bison Hunting; Prehistoric Hunting of Lesser Game Animals; Studies in Animal Populations; Butchering and Processing of Animal Products by the Prehistoric Hunter; Some Functional Aspects of the Weaponry of the Prehistoric Hunter; Hunting and Gathering Subsistence Strategies; Concluding Observations and Remarks; 457 page hard cover with index.
