Grade 3-5-- Much like Sanderson and Schroeder's It's Not Really Magic (Dillon, 1981; o.p.), this guide includes general information about microwave cooking and basic recipes that often use prepackaged mixes. The Crocker book is flashier than Sanderson and Schroeder's; there are full-color photographs of the food and the 16 tester cooks, boys and girls of various ethnic backgrounds. The instructions are also more elaborate, directing every move and enlisting a lot of adult help. The cooking times indicated sometimes cause the food to be overdone. Oddly, the recipe for muffins states: "Spoon half of the batter into the 4 baking cups. . . Continue to microwave uncovered on High (100%) 1 minute at a time, turning the ring 1/4 turn every minute, until the tops of the muffins are almost dry . . . . It is unclear why anyone would choose this long, inefficient, and complicated method.
