From the Inside Flap:
PREFACE

Abnormal psychology is among the most popular areas of study in psychology and for good reason. The problems it addresses are of immense personal and social importance—problems that touch the lives of us all in one way or another. They include problems that are all too pervasive, such as depression, sexual dysfunctions, obesity, and alcohol and substance abuse. They include problems that are less common but have a profound impact on all of us, such as schizophrenia.

The problems addressed in this book are thus not of the few. The majority of us will experience one or more of them at some time or another. Or a friend or loved one will experience them. Even those who do not personally experience these problems will be touched by society's response—or lack of response—to them.

Essentials of Abnormal Psychology in a Changing World maintains the style and substance that have distinguished the full version of the text, including the use of many case examples and self-scoring questionnaires, a clear and engaging writing style that is accessible but does not compromise rigor; research-based and comprehensive in coverage; superior pedagogy; and integration of sociocultural material throughout, including coverage of issues relating to cultural diversity, gender, and lifestyle.

Essentials of Abnormal Psychology in a Changing World provides students with the basic concepts in the field in a convenient 14-chapter format. The first 13 chapters cover historical and theoretical perspectives, approaches to psychological assessment and treatment, and the major types of psychological disorders, including adjustment disorders, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, substance-related disorders, personality disorders, gender identity and sexual disorders, schizophrenia and disorders of childhood and adolescence. The concluding chapter covers topics that lie at the interface of abnormal psychology and society: psychiatric commitment, patient's rights, and the insanity defense.

Like the full version of the text, this briefer edition integrates sociocultural material relating to ethnicity, gender, culture, and lifestyle throughout the text and in highlighted boxed features ("Focus on Diversity"). Attention to issues of diversity is clearly consistent with the importance given to cultural factors in the DSM-IV and the need to bring these important issues to the attention of the beginning student in abnormal psychology.

We approached the writing of this text with the belief that a textbook should no more than offer a portrait of a field of knowledge. It should be a teaching device—a means of presenting information in ways that arouse interest and encourage understanding and critical thinking. Toward these ends, we speak to the reader in a clear expository style. We attempt to render complex material accessible. We put a human face on the subjects we address by including many case examples drawn from our own clinical files and those of other mental health professionals. We stimulate and involve students through carefully chosen pedagogical features, questionnaires, highlights, and applications. We also include a built-in study guide designed to help students master difficult material. And yes, we keep abreast of our ever-changing subject by bringing to our readers a wealth of new scientific information drawn from the leading scientific journals and organizations.

Essentials of Abnormal Psychology in a Changing World exposes students to the multiple perspectives that inform our present understandings of abnormal behavior—the psychological, sociocultural, and biological domains. We adopt an interactionist approach which recognizes that abnormal behavior typically involves a complex interplay of multiple factors representing different domains. Because the concept of integrating diverse perspectives is often difficult for beginning students to grasp, the unique "Tying It Together" feature interspersed throughout the text helps students explore how multiple factors interact in the development of psychological disorders. FEATURES OF THE TEXT

Textbooks walk balance beams, as it were, and they can fall off in three directions, not just two. Textbooks, that is, must do justice to their subject matter while they also meet the needs of instructors and students.

In subject matter, this textbook is comprehensive, providing depth and breadth. It covers the history of societal responses to abnormal behaviors, historic and contemporary models of abnormal behaviors, methods of assessment, psychological and biological models of treatment, contemporary issues, the comprehensive range of problem behaviors set forth in the DSM, and a number of other behavioral problems that entail psychological factors—most notably in the interfaces between psychology and health.

This book also contains a number of features that are intended to keep it "on the beam" as a vehicle for instruction and learning. "Focus on Diversity" Features

Essentials o f Abnormal Psychology in a Changing World helps broaden students' perspectives so they understand the importance of issues relating to gender, culture, ethnicity, and lifestyle in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. Students will see how behavior deemed normal in one culture may be labeled abnormal in another; how states of psychological distress may be experienced differently in different cultures; how some abnormal behavior patterns are culture bound, and how therapists can incorporate a sensitivity to cultural factors in their approach to treating people from diverse backgrounds. Multicultural material is incorporated throughout the text and is highlighted in boxed features that cover the following specific topics:

Mental Health Problems Among Native Americans-Loss of a Special Relationship With Nature? (Chapter 1) Multicultural Issues in Psychotherapy (Chapter 2) Culture-Bound Syndromes (Chapter 3) Making It in America: Acculturative Stress and Psychological Adjustment (Chapter 4) Mediators of Stress Among African Americans (Chapter 4) Koro and Dhat Syndromes: Far Eastern Somatoform Disorders? (Chapter 6) Risk of Suicide Among Native American Youth (Chapter 7) Ethnicity and Alcohol Abuse (Chapter 9) Cultural Differences in Expressed Emotion (Chapter 12) Culturally Sensitive Therapies for Children (Chapter 13) "Did You Know That?" Chapter Openers

Each chapter begins with a set of "Did You Know That?" questions designed to whet student appetites for specific information contained in the chapter and to encourage them to read further. These chapter-opening questions (e.g., "Did You Know That... despite beliefs that it is a wonder drug, the antidepressant Prozac has not been shown to be any more effective than the earlier generation of antidepressants?) also encourage students to think critically and evaluate common conceptions in light of scientific evidence. The sections of the text in which the material is discussed are underscored in the chapter for easy reference. "A Closer Look" Features

These "Closer Look" features highlight cutting-edge developments in the field (e.g., "Writing as Therapy" . . . "Virtual Therapy") and applications (e.g., "Suicide Prevention") that enable students to apply information from the text to their own lives. Examples include the following:

Deinstitutionalization and the Psychiatric Homeless Population (Chapter 1) Thinking Critically About Abnormal Psychology (Chapter 1) Preventing Psychological Disorders (Chapter 2) Would You Tell Your Problems to a Computer? (Chapter 3) Writing as Therapy (Chapter 4) Psychological Methods for Lowering Arousal (Chapter 4) Emotions and the Heart (Chapter 4) Preventing AIDS (Chapter 4) Virttal Therapy (Chapter S) » Coping With a Panic Attack (Chapter 5) The Recovered Memory Controversy (Chapter 6) St. John's Wort-A Natural "Prozac"? (Chapter 7) Suicide Prevention (Chapter 7) The Controlled Social Drinking Controversy (Chapter 9) Obesity: A National Epidemic (Chapter 10) To Sleep, Perchance to Dream (Chapter 10) Rape Prevention (Chapter 11) Savant Syndrome (Chapter 13) The Duty to Warn (Chapter 14) Self-Scoring Questionnaries

Self-scoring questionnaires (for example, "Are you Type A?," "Fear of Fat Scale," and the p "Life Orientation Test") involve students in the discussion at hand and permit them to a.. evaluate their own behavior. In some cases, students may become more aware of troubling concerns, such as states of depression or problems with drug or alcohol use, that they may wish to bring to the attention of a professional. We have screened the questionnaires to ensure they will provide students with useful information to reflect on as well as ;serve as a springboard for class discussion. Built-in Study Guide

Essentials of Abnormal Psychology in a Changing World contains a built-in study guide Shat consists of "Study Break" sections that follow each of the major sections of a chapter. lady Breaks provide students with the opportunity to review the material they have just read, test their knowledge by completing a set of multiple choice questions, and think critically about the issues that were raised in the preceding section of the text. Study Break sections are organized in four subsections:

Review It (Question and answer review) Define It (Listing of key terms) Recall It (Multiple-choice quiz) Think About It (Questions that encourage critical thinking and invite students to relate the material to their own experiences) Glossary

Key terms are boldfaced in the text and defined in the margin and the glossary. The origins of key terms are often discussed. By learning to attend to commonly found Greek and Latin word origins, students can acquire skills that will help them decipher the meanings of new words. These decoding skills are a valuable objective for general education as well as a specific asset for the study of abnormal psychology. ANCILLARIES
