CHAPTER 1

 

Tomson Highway

Highway was born and raised on the Brochet Reserve in northern Manitoba, where his first language was Cree. Highway didn’t begin learning English until he was six years old, when he was sent away to a Catholic boarding school. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a B.A. in music and English, and he began writing at about age thirty. Now a resident of Toronto, Highway is the founder and was the first director of the Native Earth Performing Arts Theatre, and has received wide acclaim for the plays that he has written and produced, including the Dora Mavor Moore Award, the Toronto Arts Award (1990), and the Chalmers Canadian Play Award in 1986 for The Rez Sisters and again in 1990 for Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing.

 

Jean Yoon

Loud Mouth Asian Babes is a theatre company that is committed to the development of new Canadian drama by, for, and about Asian women and Jean Yoon (1962 - ) is its Seoul Babe/Artistic Director. As an actor, Yoon, who was born in Illinois and raised in Toronto, has appeared in theatre productions of Tarragon Theatre, Cahoots Theatre Projects, and Theatre Passe Muraille while her film and television credits include “La Femme Nikita”, “Waking the Dead”, “This is Wonderland”, “The Best Years”, “Instant Star” and “The Path to 9/11.” As a playwright, Yoon’s credits include “Sliding for Home & Borders”, “Spite”, “The Yoko Ono Project”, and “Hongbu and Nolbu: The Tale of the Magic Pumpkins”, an adaptation of a classic Korean folktale. Her poetry, fiction, and essays have been published in magazines and anthologies including Fireweed, what!magazine, The Kava Anthology of New Asian North American Poetry, and Han Kmt: Critical Art and Writing by Korean Canadian Women, from which the essay here is taken.

 

Sherwin Tija

Born in Toronto in 1975 and now based in Montreal, Sherwin Tjia is an artist, a comix creator, a writer of fiction and poetry, and a freelance journalist. Tjia graduated from Queen’s University (B.F.A.) and Con-cordia (M.F.A.) and has shown his paintings in several group and solo shows. In addition, Tjia’s writing has been published in a range of books including Pedigree Girls and The World is a Heartbreaker as well as periodicals, including Quarry, Blood & Aphorisms, Sub-Terrain, and Adbusters, the original source of the essay reprinted here.

 

Christopher Dewdney

Currently a resident of Toronto, Christopher Dewdney (1951— ) is an award-winning poet and essayist. Dewdney has taught writing at various colleges and universities in Toronto and has also appeared on various radio and television programs. He is a prolific writer, having produced several collections of poetry as well as non-fiction books, including The Immaculate Perception (1985) and Demon Pond (2004). According to Dewdney, “My poetry is warped out of science. I think I’m a frustrated scientist in poetry and a frustrated poet in science.” His blend of interests is reflected once again in Ac-quainted with the Night (2004) and Soul of The World: Unlocking the Secrets of Time (2008), his most recent non-fiction books.

 

Joe Fiorito

Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Joe Fiorito (1948— ) began his writing career in Montreal, Quebec, where he worked as a columnist for the Montreal Gazette and Hour magazine. Fiorito has since contributed to a variety of publications, including the National Post, The Globe and Mail, and EnRoute. He now lives in Toronto and contributes regular columns to the Toronto Star. Fiorito has worked for CBC Radio and he is also a published poet.

 

CHAPTER 2

 

Steven Heighton

Steven Heighton has consistently been recognized for his writing with awards, including the Canadian Authors Association Air Canada Award for most promising young writer in 1989, the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award in 1990, and a National Magazine Awards gold medal for fiction in 1992. In addition, Heighton’s Flight Paths of the Emperor was a Trillium Book Award finalist in 1993 and On Earth As It Is was nominated for the Governor General’s Award for poetry in 1995. In 2000, Heighton’s novel The Shadow Boxer was published. Steven Heighton was born in Toronto in 1961 and grew up there and in Red Lake in Northern Ontario. After graduating from Queen’s University with a B.A. and an M.A. in English, he spent time teaching in Japan and then returned to Kingston, Ontario, where he became editor of Quarry magazine. He has also lived in Alberta and British Columbia, and now lives with his family in Kingston, where he works as a writer.

 

Anik See

Based on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Anik See is a writer, book designer, and creator of “small, beautifully handcrafted chapbooks and broadsides of politically challenging work by under-published authors” (www.telusplanet.net/public/aniksee). See is also a traveller, as evidenced by the range of tales of food and travel collected in her book, A Fork in the Road (2000).

 

Chris Turner’s

Planet Simpson (2004) is Chris Turner’s best-selling book and explores how an animated television series “documented an era and defined a generation.” This book is characteristic of the pop-culture and technology topics that Turner has explored as a freelance journalist, his writing appearing in publications including Shift, Time, The Globe and Mail, This Magazine, and Adbusters. Turner’s writing has earned him six National Magazine Awards, and his essay “The Simpsons Generation,” in Shift, was reprinted in newspapers across the continent.

Originally from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Turner attended Queen’s University, where he completed a B.A. He now lives in Calgary, Alberta.

 

Matt Cohen

Born in Kingston, Ontario, in 1942, and raised in Ottawa, Cohen earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Toronto and began his career teaching political philosophy at McMaster University. Cohen went on to become a full-time writer whose work was recognized with the Toronto Arts Award (1998), two National Magazine Awards for short fiction, the John Glassco Translation Prize (1990), and the Governor General’s Award for fiction (1999) for Elizabeth and After. One of the founding members of the Writers’ Union of Canada, Matt Cohen also served as writer-in-residence at several Canadian universities and was visiting professor at the University of Bologna in Italy in 1985.

 

Jenn Lamothe

Jenn Lamothe (1980 - ) is a freelance writer living in Sudbury. Her writing has been published in The Sudbury Star and the essay here was originally broadcast on CBC’s Radio’s “This I Believe” series.

 

Miali-Elise Coley

Youth advocate Miali-Elise Coley is a half Jamaican, half Inuk resident of Nunavut. Now working as an Executive Assistant in the Premier’s Office in Nunavut, she has also worked as a summer day camp counselor, youth mentor and program coordinator.  In 1996, as the Youth Coordinator for the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, she founded a summer day camp for under-privileged children known as ‘Sprouts’ and more recently she completed a four-year term as Chairperson of the Inuit Circumpolar Youth Council (ICYC), an organization that  represents the circumpolar regions of Canada, Chukotka (Russia), Alaska and Greenland. Coley’s participation in programs including Nunavut Sivuniksavut (a college training program for Inuit youth) and Canada World Youth has contributed to her understanding of her own Inuk heritage and history as well as that of the world more broadly.

Anita Rau Badami

Born in eastern India, Anita Rau Badami (1961— ) was raised and educated in India, where she began her writing career as a journalist.
