Encuadrable en la corriente naturalista, fue maestro del relato corto, siendo considerado como uno de los más importantes escritores de cuentos de la historia de la literatura.1 Como dramaturgo escribió cuatro obras, y sus relatos cortos han sido aclamados por escritores y crítica.2 3 Chéjov compaginó su carrera literaria con la medicina; en una de sus cartas4 escribió al respecto: La medicina es mi esposa legal; la literatura, sólo mi amante.5 Dejó de escribir obras teatrales después de la mala acogida que tuvo su obra La gaviota (en ruso: "?????") en el año 1896 en el estatal (imperial) Teatro Alexandrinski de San Petersburgo. Sin embargo, esta misma obra tuvo un gran éxito en el año 1898, interpretada por la compañía Teatro del Arte de Moscú de Konstantín Stanislavski, interpretando también Tío Vania ("???? ????"), Las tres hermanas ("??? ??????") y El jardín de los cerezos ("????ë??? ???"). Al principio Chéjov escribía simplemente por razones económicas, pero su ambición artística creció, introduciendo innovaciones que han influido en la evolución de los relatos cortos.6 Su originalidad consiste en el uso de la técnica del monólogo, adoptada más tarde por James Joyce y otros escritores del modernismo anglosajón, además del rechazo de la finalidad moral presente en la estructura de las obras tradicionales.7 No le preocupaban las dificultades que esto planteaba al lector, porque consideraba que el papel del artista es realizar preguntas, no responderlas.8 Según el escritor estadounidense E. L. Doctorow, Chéjov posee la voz más natural de la ficción, «sus cuentos parecen esparcirse sobre la página sin arte, sin ninguna intención estética detrás de ellos.
