Bridge of San Luis Rey (Penguin Modern Classics)

Wilder, Thornton Author

9780141184258: Bridge of San Luis Rey (Penguin Modern Classics)

An ancient bridge collapses over a gorge in Peru, hurling five people into the abyss. It seems a meaningless human tragedy. But one witness, a Franciscan monk, believes the deaths might not be as random as they appear. Convinced that the disaster is a punishment sent from Heaven, the monk sets out to discover all he can about the travellers. The five strangers were connected in some way, he thinks. There must be a purpose behind their deaths. But are their lost lives the result of sin? ...Or of love?

About the Author:

Thornton (Niven) Wilder (1897-1975) American writer and playwright, best known for OUR TOWN (1938) and THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY (1927), an examination of justice and altruism.

From AudioFile:

In this Pulitzer Prize winner, a bridge collapses in eighteenth-century Peru; five die. Who were they? In the answer to that question lie numerous cosmic ironies, which are related in a melancholy narrative of great power, simplicity and beauty. Waterston, star of NBC's "Law and Order," never possessed a strong voice. Time has made it hoarse and scratchy. Nonetheless, he reads intelligently with just the right sombre tone. As is usual with HighBridge titles, the sound quality is pristine. Y.R. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Book Description Penguin UK, 2001. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 'There are books that haunt you down the years . . . The Bridge of San Luis Rey is of this kind'When the bridge over a gorge in Peru breaks, five people are plunged to their deaths. Brother Juniper, a witness, wishing to explain the ways of God to his fellow human beings, examines the lives of these five, believing that this will lead him to find a reason for the fatal accident. The questions he raises concern life and death; chance and God; faith and unbelief. Whatever answers are to be found contain an affirmation, if not of God, then of the powers of love.'Few writers have better captured the vanities and compexities of the ruling classes in Spanish South America' The Times.
