Offering a new and uniquely multidisciplinary approach to malformations of the brain, this book begins with definitions that clarify the different types of malformations. Since malformations occur in a forming brain, neuroembryology and some of the genes guiding normal development are discussed. Causes of malformations--abnormal chromosomes, Mendelian genetics and external teratogens-- are reviewed. After this basic knowledge has been put in place, each "user-friendly" chapter synthesizes the neuropathology, specific embryology related to the pathology to the malformation, and what is known of possible causes and mechanisms by which the malformation occurs. Each chapter also describes the clinical, radiological, chromosomal and genetic aspects of the malformation. The central nervous system in twins and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is also considered.
Generously illustrated, this volume contains instructive pictures of fetal malformations. The chapter on migration disorders contains many gross and microscopic photographs. Destructive lesions, perinatal hemorrhagic and hypoxic-ischemic lesions and early neonatal degenerations are considered in order to differentiate them from malformations. The book concludes with an appendix listing gene loci which have so far been identified for various malformations.

Review:

"Although multiauthored, this text flows well and is consistent in its various sections....The gross and microscopic illustrations are abundant and of high quality. They cover an amazing spectrum of malformations....The extensive clinical information will be very useful to clinicians who treat patients with congenital malformations."--Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology

"This work originates with the prolific Vancouver group and is 'meant to be of practical help' to those interested in the pathology, embryology, clinical aspects, radiology, and genetics of CNS malformations. A daunting undertaking, the authors have nonetheless risen to it. Pathologists experienced mostly with adult material and basic researchers searching for a succinct source of information will benefit from the book. Clinicians will value the application of imaging techniques and discussions of diagnosis and counseling. Subspecialist too will find the book valuable, as reviews, including those of rare disorders, are impressively detailed."--Pediatric Pathology

"Provides immense help and guidance to clinicians, radiologists, geneticists, and, of course, both general pathologists and neuropathologists in evaluation of patients during life and after death....Every pathology trainee should be given a copy on the first day of residency."-- Neurology

"Should definitely be consulted by all those physicians who interpret ultrasound and perinatal magnetic resonance imaging scans. Its contents must be engraved in the minds and eyes of practicing pediatric neurologists, and it should at least be on the shelf of many neuroscientists."--Modern Pathology

"In this excellent and ambitious book, the authors attempt to give a very comprehensive review of developmental brain malformations, including the embryological and genetic bases for the disorders, the typical clinical presentation, most common radiological manifestations, and the gross and microscopic findings....This is a superb book and a "must read" for any physician who deals with developmental malformations of the brain on a regular basis or who is interested in normal and abnormal brain development."--Annals of Neurology
