Among extant Greek comedies, the Frogs is unique for the light it throws on classical Greek attitudes to tragedy and to literature in general. It merits a much more extensive commentary than it has so far received, for the establishment of the text itself has rested for over a century on collations which were inadequate and inaccurate.
Review:
"It is arguably Aristophanes' greatest achievement, and certainly his most successful production....And yet, strangely enough, 'Frogs' has not been blessed with great critical attention....But this no longer matters, as Sir Kenneth Dover's magisterial edition sweeps the field. His many gifts as philologist, metrician, and literary critic have never been put to greater use than here....The introduction runs to more than a hundred pages, covering every imaginable aspect of the play. Throughout Dover tries to 'visualize the positions of the characters at any given moment, their movements and gestures, and hear their tone of voice in the mind's ear.' This is no easy task, given our lack of data about many feature of fifth century theater."
Erich Segal, Times Literary Supplement, 4/14/95
