Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by Hans Tisdall (illustrator). Reprint. First published in the UK in 1941, this is a twenty second impression of 1969. Ex school library with bookplate to ffep, but with only discreet stamp and biro number to copyright page and old docket to rear endpapers. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some old tape marks to endpapers, not price clipped (30s, £1.50), no personal inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy in bright retro unsunned jacket. 443pp. This book was based on Ernest Hemingway's (1899-1961), experiences during the Spanish Civil War. High in the pine forests of the Spanish Sierra, a guerrilla band prepares to blow up a vital bridge. Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer in the International Brigade, has been sent to handle the dynamiting. There, in the mountains, he finds the dangers and the intense comradeship of war. And there he discovers Maria, a young woman who has escaped from Franco's rebels. The book was adapted into a major Hollywood film starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' is one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century by one of the greatest American writers. Seller Inventory # 004940

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. A later printing of the UK edition published in 1978. The book was first published in the UK in March 1941, and first published in the USA by Charles Scribner's & Sons also in 1941. ***Near fine in brown cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still beautifully bright. Edges of boards just slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. Interior pages clean. There is a slight indentation in the pages where a period bookmark was left in the book - probably for many years! [please see scans] Spine tight. **In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper that is unpriced. The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips or tears - just some light rubbing to the surface colour at the spine and extremities. Dustwrapper bright. ***443 pages. 195 mm x 133 mm. ***'"For Whom The Bell Tolls" is a long, very serious book about the Spanish War, where Hemmingway (sic) fought on the Republican side, and it deals with the blowing up of a bridge in the mountains. It is full of courage and brutality ---.' Listener (Period review quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***'"For Whom the Bell Tolls" tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. It was published just after the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It assumes the reader knows that the war was between the Second Spanish Republic government, supported by the Soviet Union, which many foreigners like Robert went to Spain to help, and a successful, Nationalist faction, supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. It was commonly viewed as the dress rehearsal for the Second World War. In 1940, the year the book was published, the United States had not yet entered the war, which had begun on 1st Sep 1939, with Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland. The novel is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works, along with "The Sun Also Rises", "A Farewell to Arms", and "The Old Man and the Sea". [Wiki] ***A 1978 reprint of Hemingway's famous novel of the Spanish Civil War complete in its original dustwrapper. The book and dustwrapper are in nice condition, without any significant faults. Hardcover editions from this period were mostly produced for lending libraries, and so non-library survivors are quite thin on the ground. A nice hardcover reading copy to have. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 8222
