J F C KINGMAN WRITES IN FOREWORD: "Everyone knows that mathematica methods play an essential part in modern engineering, and most mathematicians realise that engineering problems raise interesting questions of mathematical theory, particularly concerning differential equations. But is is easy for the applied mathematician to think of real systems as evolving smoothly and deterministically according to some differential equation, and it is easy too for the engineer to regard the mathematician as incapable of contemplating them otherwise. Systems involving random fluctuations are certainly more difficult to analyse, but there are contributions which mathematical theory can make to their understanding. Notably the theory of stochastic differential equations and the Ito integral has a good deal to offer if tempered with a dose of engineering scepticism. But there remains a barrier of language which can only be overcome when mathematicians and engineers work closely together and subject themselves to the discipline of real problems. Such a synthesis was the purpose othe the IUTAM symposium of which this book is the expression, and its success can be judged by the reader.
