Reviews

Wolverton, a former NASA research scientist, analyzes 50 houseplants that can purify and revitalize the air we breathe. He begins with chapters discussing indoor air pollution, photosynthesis, and plants' role in removing organic chemicals, such as formaldehyde and ammonia, from the air. A fourth chapter gives general information on humidity, air circulation, light requirements, care, and pest control. The list of 50 plants rates each one on its ability to remove chemical vapors, ease of growth and maintenance, resistance to pests, and transpiration rate (the ability to add pure moisture to the air). Details are given on each plant's preferred growing conditions, its place of origin, and the best methods for growth and maintenance. Among the highest-rated plants are the areca, lady, and bamboo palms and the rubber plant. There are color photographs of each plant. George Cohen
