In a compelling example of cultural politics, the Spaniard Pablo Picasso has been transformed into a hero of French modernism. Recently, however, there is a growing awareness that Picasso's involvement with his native land was crucial throughout his life. In this book, eminent art historians examine Picasso's dynamic involvement with the country of his birth and its cultural and artistic traditions. Jonathan Brown identifies a distinctive Spanish pictorial tradition as embodied in the works of El Greco, Velazquez, and Goya, showing how these masters inspired Picasso by providing him with a point of reference outside the grand tradition of European classicism. Then Robert Lubar discusses how Picasso grappled with constructions of Spanish identity formulated by Catalan modernisme and the Castilian Generation of 1898, as well as with French ideas about "Spanishness," which he encountered in Paris. Lubar demonstrates how these myths of national character are deconstructed in "Demoiselles d' Avignon". Robert Rosenblum focuses on Picasso's still lifes, arguing persuasively that many have coded and, at times, unabashedly patriotic references to Spain. Finally Gertje Utley and Susan Grace Galassi examine Picasso's re-engagement with Spain after World War II. Utley discusses Picasso's affiliation with French Communism, which made him a target for right-wing critics and contributed to his decision to abandon Paris for the Cote d'Azur, closer to his Mediterranean roots and his artistic origins. And Galassi analyzes the climactic confrontation with a masterpiece of Spanish art, the "Variations on Las Meninas", which Picasso painted in Cannes in 1957.
