Review:
Alison Cunningham, a spunky, spoiled young American heiress, is alone in the world -- no man, no family. She takes part in a seance to ask her late father's advice on managing her inheritance. Instead, she makes contact with the ghost of Lady Caroline Lamb, mistress of the early 19th century poet Lord Byron. Caro, as she was known, begs Alison to come to England to find and publish Byron's memoirs, long thought lost to the world, but which Caro hid for safekeeping. This will let everyone know how much Byron truly loved her. Arriving at deserted Dewhurst Manor, Alison meets ambitious Jeremy Ryder, an attractive antiques dealer, also there to search for the papers. He is a man of charm and business savvy, but one averse to closeness after witnessing his parents' bitter divorce. Alison and Jeremy begin as rivals who scorn one another, but attraction grows. Their bond is strengthened by Caro's matchmaking and by Jeremy's coming to Alison's aid when her boorish corrupt lawyer shows up and interferes with her plans to buy the manor. No sooner do Alison and Jeremy find the memoirs than she awakens in the morning to find both men and the prized papers gone. She is alone again after giving her heart to Jeremy, and she's failed at her mission for Caro. What became of the memoirs? Is Jeremy really a gem or a jerk? The fast-paced final chapters bring a happier ending for Alison and Jeremy than there was for Byron and Caro. Note: Fictitious "excerpts" from the memoirs and letters of Caro and Byron, based on Jones' research into their lives, add richness to this story. Though she crafts them in all possible good taste, some readers may be disturbed by their several references to Byron's bisexual and incestuous liaisons. Her style is upbeat, her characters spunky and intriguing. A magnetic story -- a blend of past and present that you'll find delightful! An imaginative storyteller -- her tales are a wonderful addition to the genre! Adventure, a ghost, and lovers past and present -- wow!Frances Mosconi -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved -- From Literary Times
From Publishers Weekly:
Only the most patient readers, with a serious interest in Lord Byron and Lady Caroline Lamb, will make it past Jones's (Emily's Secret) hopscotch opening. Somewhere about chapter four things slip into place, and the beginnings of a truly remarkable story emerge. Alison Cunningham, a young, Boston heiress, is confronted by the troubled ghost of Lady Caroline, who asks her to find Byron's secret memoirs so that she may prove to society that Bryon did indeed love her. Alison ventures to England and impulsively buys Dewhurst Manor, where the memoirs are purportedly hidden. There, she meets Jeremy Ryder, a British antiques appraiser who is also looking for them. Their love story is entwined with that of Lady Caroline and Lord Byron, as told through Caroline's letters and Jones's fact-based pastiche of the Byron memoirs. It's a smart idea, as the contrast of the bitter historical passion gives greater depth and dimension to Alison and Jeremy's contemporary one.
