This beginner's course in spoken and written Czech is designed to be of interest to someone who has never learnt the language before or who wants to build on existing skills. Based on the Council of Europe's guidelines on language learning, this book is part of a course where emphasis is placed on practical communication, as well as containing useful information on the culture of Czechoslovakia. A book/cassette pack is also available. There isn't exactly a wide range of Czech language courses available in the UK and I tried a few before this one. This was the first with which I actually managed to get somewhere and recently was able to confidently put what I had learnt in to practice in Prague. How it does better than others is simply because it doesn't try to take on to much at once, ie the pace is a bit slower but it is very important to get to grips with the boring old pronunciation guide at the beginning before moving on to trying to learn words and phrases no matter how tempting. After completing this course you will not be speaking perfect fluent Czech but you should be able to make yourself understood in the Czech republic, particularly important if you intend to leave the beaten tourist trail. Another helpful feature is the information provided about Czech customs, formalities etc, which can be somewhat different to what we in the west may expect.
