OUTSIDE PASSAGE : A Memoir of an Alaskan Childhood (ISBN: 0375752404 / 0-375-75240-4) Scully, Julia Quantity Available: 1
Book Description: Modern Library, New York, NY, 1998. Soft Cover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: None as Issued. First Edition, 2nd Printing. BRAND NEW & Collectible. Stated First Edition. Memoir of Julia Scully's childhood in the barren town of Nome, Alaska around 1940. The central figures are Scully's mother, Rose; her father, whose suicide was discovered by his two daughters; a liquor shop owner named Hessel Green; a ''bad'' woman named Norma; her mother's roadhouse where miners drank and played cards --- each portrayed against the unadorned background of Scully's memory. In the early 1970's, while an editior at Modern Photography, Scully was among the first to recognize and admire the photography of Mike Disfarmer, who run a portrait studio from 1939 to 1946 in Arkansas. Disfarmer simply placed his subjects before a plain, dark backdrop; props, if any, either both belonged to or were chosen by, the subjects themselves, and clicked the shutter at the magic moment. Parallel has been drawn betwen Scully's sparse prose and Disfarmer's approach to portraitures . clean, simple and powerfully alive, minimal artists' commentaries.
