"...the description of Leninsky's rise in the cloak business is perfectly straightforward. Cahan had a remarkably good head about self-interest, snobbery, social climbing, money, and the Americanization of the Jews; he is not a doctrinaire Socialist; he is never simple-minded. He was not a great literary artist, and his book is more interesting as social history than as literature. Nevertheless he had the instincts of a fine novelist, and one finds in him none of the false piety of later generations of Jewish writers."
