In an earlier age in Wittenberg, Germany, the scholar Johannes Faust burns his books, repulsed by the lies they contain. His despair is answered by a representative of a mysterious and malevolent unseen race, who offers the disenchanted thinker hitherto undreamed-of knowledge: the secrets of flight, the cosmos, economics, engineering, medicine and the atom. And so begins Faust's transition from madman to savior-from Johannes to Jack-as he ushers in a great Age of Mechanization hundreds of years before its rightful time, setting the mighty gears and pistons of industry in motion to first remake Germany, and then all Europe, in his own image. But, ultimately, it is love-for the beauty and purity of Margarete, the young daughter of a struggling businessman-that damns Faust and humanity as well. For brutality and greed will always pervert genius and love in a degenerate world-a world which now, thanks to Jack Faust, is rapidly sliding into chaos...or something far worse.
