Kindergarten-Grade 3 When Crispin and his two older brothers set off to seek their fortunes, each is given the choice of any animal on their father's farm. One chooses a fine horse, another a fierce dog; despite his brothers' taunts, Crispin chooses Marmaduke, a piglet. Marmaduke proves to be speciala dainty dancer who never grows any larger. The populace is charmed by this waltzing, jigging pig, and Crispin has found his fortune. When a spoiled princess claims Marmaduke, the pig takes control in a satisfying and amusing ending. The story begins quickly, is told with an economy of words, and the characters are suitably and satisfactorily accounted for at the conclusion. The smooth-flowing text is amusing. The illustrations are a delight. Creative use of space and excellent composition allow characters to step out of paintings and across the page, giving the book a dynamic quality. Town and palace scenes have a rich tapestry effect; several scenes are almost painterly. Warm earth tones and a folkloric feeling complement detailed backgrounds that invite close examination without overwhelming the storyline. Best of all, the humor in the illustrations perfectly augments the humor inherent in the text. A good choice for read-alouds and storytelling.
