Caroline Kirby, raised by her grandmother in San Francisco, returns after an aimless life and a divorce, to her childhood home in Hawaii, seeking the truth about her father's death. She finds that her mother, Noelle, is alive but trapped in the past by a mind unwilling to confront her part in her husband's death. Caroline's grandmother and aunt are willing to live with Noelle's amnesia, but Caroline is not, feeling her mother is being cheated of a real life. She pressures Noelle to remember. Meanwhile, Caroline is learning that her father was not a paragon, and this makes it easier for her to resist her ex-husband (who is very like her father) and reach out for love and a fuller life in her new home, Hawaii.
