Editorial Reviews:
Synopsis:
"This, then, is narrative history—a kind of history that goes back to an older literary tradition.... The writing is superb...one of the historical and literary achievements of our time." — The Washington Post Book World

"Gettysburg...is described with such meticulous attention to action, terrain, time, and the characters of the various commanders that I understand, at last, what happened in that battle.... Mr. Foote has an acute sense of the relative importance of events and a novelist's skill in directing the reader's attention to the men and the episodes that will influence the course of the whole war, without omitting items which are of momentary interest. His organization of facts could hardly be better." — Atlantic

"Though the events of this middle year of the Civil War have been recounted hundreds of times, they have rarely been re-created with such vigor and such picturesque detail." — The New York Times Book Review

"The lucidity of the battle narratives, the vigor of the prose, the strong feeling for the men from generals to privates who did the fighting, are all controlled by constant sense of how it happened and what it was all about. Foote has the novelist's feeling for character and situation, without losing the historian's scrupulous regard for recorded fact. The Civil War is likely to stand unequaled." —Walter Mills

Review:
In 1954, Shelby Foote was a young novelist with a contract to write a short history of the Civil War. It soon became clear, however, that he had undertaken a long-term project. Twenty years later Foote finally completed his massive and essential trilogy on the War Between the States. His three books are prose masterpieces with lively characterizations and gripping action. Although Foote never sacrifices the truth of what happened to his penchant for artistry, his skills as a novelist serve him well. Reading all three of these books will take some time, but they are worth the investment--especially if you, like Foote, have a touch of sympathy for the South's lost cause.

Book Description: Random House, Inc., 2005. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. New hardcover, later printing (c. 2005) of the first volume of Shelby Foote's magisterial narrative history of the American Civil War, superb mylar-protected jacket, excellent text-block exterior w/ cut-page style side edge & pristine smooth-cut top & bottom edges, flawless library-durable gray cloth-over-boards cover w/ excellent edges & corners, tight sewn binding w/ handsome cloth header bands, illustrated w/ forty-four maps throughout the text & w/ superb color end-paper maps w/ front end-papers showing Theater of War (1861-1862) & back end-papers showing the Virginia Theater (1861-1862) * 6.75" x 9.50", 1.32 kg, 840 pp. * This classic narrative history is the first volume of Shelby Foote's magisterial three-volume history of the American Civil War. This book opens w/ Jefferson Davis' resignation from the United States Senate & Abraham Lincoln's departure from Springfield, Illinois for the national capital. These two leaders, whose lives are continually woven into the great chain of events which unfold throughout the story, are only the first of scores of compelling personalities which in effect make "The Civil War: A Narrative" a multiple biography set against the crisis of an age. * All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days, Second Manassas, & Antietam & Perryville in the fall of 1862, as are smaller but often equally important engagements on both land & sea: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, the "Monitor" vs. the "Merrimac", Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, among many more, and all of these conflicts are dramatically presented w/ "narrative" the key not only to this book's incandescence but also to its truth told entirely from the points of view of the people involved. The reader learns not only what was happening in the North & South, on the political, military, diplomatic & home fronts -- the reader LIVES through the events as if experiencing them directly. This is the way it was, in its entirety, as Shelby Foote discovered it through his many years of exhaustive research. * In its depth of understanding & its truly remarkable portrayal of personalities, "The Civil War: A Narrative", and this volume which forms its first part, stands as an authoritative achievement of monumental stature.
