Chapter I explains the three main approaches to the teaching of phonics, their advantages and disadvantages, and some basic principles for teaching phonics, regardless of approach used. Chapter 11 explains the content of phonics, the sounds of the language and their spellings. Chapters III, IV, V, VI, and VII demonstrate how various word attack elements might be taught.
Chapters VIII, IX, and X explore special problems involved in the teaching of word attack skills. Chapter VIII contains suggestions for helping disabled readers. Chapter IX explores techniques for handling diverse dialects. Chapter X makes suggestions for adapting word attack instruction for youngsters whose native tongue is not English.
Chapter XI describes resources for teaching word attack skills. Listed are workbooks, kits, computer software, children's books, games, and other manipulatives. Chapter XII discusses techniques for assessing word attack skills and lists a number of tests. Also included is an informal word attack test, which the reader is free to use.
Emphasis throughout the text is on instruction. Although materials are listed, it has been the author's experience that careful teaching is what makes the difference. Much of the text is devoted to providing sample lessons and ideas for practice. Lists of words accompany each word attack skill covered in the text so the teacher will have a ready supply of examples to use for presenting a skill or creating exercises to reinforce the skill.
Pronunciations listed in the text are based on those contained in Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary (Mish, 1983). In those instances where two or three pronunciations were listed for a particular word, the first was chosen. As a practical matter it wasn't feasible to include all legitimate pronunciations. Readers will need to adapt the text to fit their dialects and those of their students.
